January is always a good time to be in Florida and whenever we are in the Sunshine State we make a point of visiting Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club. This year’s visit is a bit different. R+L Delivers the Coates Golf Championship, the start of the LPGA Season, to Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club.
In 2014 our friends at Coates Golf approached both R+L Carriers and Golden Ocala about partnering to host an official LPGA event in Ocala. The Ron Garl designed course would make for a great tournament site. With a few months of work the event came together. Today 120 of the world’s best lady golfers will tackle the course at Golden Ocala.
The Coates Golf Championship presented by R+L Carriers brought 45 of the top 50 LPGA players to Ocala this week. The 120 player field has a $1.5 million dollar purse. The event brings a full week of golf and events for players, fans and residents of Golden Ocala. Big named golfers like Morgan Pressel, Cheyenne Woods, Paula Creamer, Juli Inkster and Karrie Webb are among the field of players this week. The world’s #1 lady golfer, Inbee Park, the 26 year old from Seoul South Korea is expected to be on the leader board this week as well.
With two weeks of preparation, the course was readied for the thousands of fans who will descend to watch the pros play. A charity gala hosted by John Travolta and Kelly Preston kicked off the weeklong schedule of events. The Saturday and Sunday prior to play held practice times for the tour players and hopefuls vying for a spot via a qualifying tournament.
Practice rounds continued Monday and Tuesday welcomed amateurs playing in the pro-am. The Golf Channel will be airing parts of the tournament live and we encourage you to watch from home if you can’t be in Ocala this week.
Throughout the tournament, R+L will be giving away prizes on Twitter. Fans who tweet and use the hashtag #RLDrives will have chances to win golf balls and a brand new driver to add to their bag. Details for the contest can be found on our website.
