March 29 is set aside as National Mom and Pop Business Owner Day to celebrate the millions of hard working people that own and nurture small businesses. Part of our mission at R+L Carriers is to support those dedicated manufacturing folks working hard to keep America running. We’re a family owned and operated company ourselves, starting from one truck and growing into the global transportation provider we are today, so we understand the value and dedication that goes into a Mom and Pop business.
According to the Small Business Administration there are more than 27 million small businesses operating in America, making up 99.9% of the total workforce. We’re taking this time to celebrate some of the Mom and Pop operations we’ve had the pleasure of visiting this past year.
Where can you find an indoor, climate controlled rodeo and a NASCAR race car and Hauler? Mesquite, Texas. We visited this family owned company in December 2012 and were happy to share our race car and hauler with owner Annie and 120 guests. Here, you see Annie trying out our race car. Annie oversees a team that manufactures medical devices, using both our domestic LTL shipping services and Global logistics services to keep those products moving. We congratulate Annie and her team for keeping jobs in Mesquite! Read more about our visit to Mesquite, Texas.
While in Louisiana for the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, in December 2012, we visited a printing company in Shreveport. The owner and founder, pictured here in the blue sport coat, started the business in his in-laws’ basement and it’s now among the top producers of products for the parking and transit industry. It is still family owned, like us, and currently employs 80 people. The founder, now in his 80’s, is still at the helm today and considers his many employees part of his extended family. It’s a winter’s day today for many of our readers, but we’re dreaming of our visit to a California Mom and Pop manufacturer in Oceanside in August 2012. Followers of our blog will remember that this was a major cable modem and electronics manufacturer, working hard to keep jobs in Oceanside. Speaking of Mom and Pops (or Mamas & the Papas, you didn’t think we’d pass that one up did you?) you’ll also remember we had only one day to visit them, but in that time we learned that Oceanside is a beautiful city with wonderful people! We can’t wait to go back. Read more about our visit to Oceanside, CA.
Take this opportunity on National Mom and Pop Business Owner Day to celebrate the family owned businesses in your town! If you’d like to give any of them a shoutout – feel free to do so right here in the comments.
